Herbal Cough Syrup

 

Herbal cough syrups are a natural homemade alternative to conventional cough syrups. In our family, we always prefer to try natural methods of healing the body before even thinking about taking medications for it. The following is my favorite herbal cough syrup recipe that I have been making for years.

Honey - naturally soothes your throat. It is also naturally anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-septic. Be sure to always use organic raw local honey.

Ginger - is naturally anti-inflammatory and has an expectorant action.

Lemon and orange - helps break up mucus and is packed with vitamin C to help strengthen your immune system.

Thyme - is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It is also a natural expectorant and helps get rid of mucus.

Ingredient amounts can vary. Use more or less of whatever you would like. Always use organic ingredients.

RECIPE:

2 cups organic raw local honey

3-4 slices fresh lemon

3-4 slices fresh orange

1 tablespoon fresh ginger (pieces)

1/4 teaspoon dried ginger

1 tablespoon dried thyme

Place all ingredients into a glass mason jar. Be sure to squeeze the lemon and orange juice into the jar before placing the pieces into the jar. 

Place a lid tightly on the jar and shake. Store in a cool dark place with an air tight lid. This will last several months but my family likes the taste so much so it doesn't usually last that long in our house.

You can eat this by the spoonful just like you would a store bought cough syrup or you can use in tea.
