natural sports drink

Neon colored sports drinks are a staple on most sports fields.

Although replacing electrolytes during rigorous exercise is important, commercially produced sports drinks are not the way to do it. These drinks are loaded with sugars, food dyes and other unhealthy ingredients. Thankfully there is an easy alternative to those unhealthy versions. Making your own sports drinks is simple and saves you a lot of money. Try one of these recipes for a DIY sports drink and leave the neon colors on the cleats, balls and jerseys!

CITRUS EXPLOSION SPORTS DRINK:

3 cups water
1 cup orange juice
1/2 cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons raw honey
1/4 teaspoon mineral salt*

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend thoroughly. Pour over ice or serve at room temperature. Enjoy!

WATERMELON LIME SPORTS DRINK:

2 cups watermelon (cubed & seeded)
1 cup water
2 tablespoons lime juice
2 tablespoons raw honey
1/4 teaspoon mineral salt*

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend thoroughly. Pour over ice or serve at room temperature. Enjoy!

* Mineral salt is salt that has not been processed to remove the beneficial electrolytes and minerals. The two brands that we recommend are Celtic Sea Salt and Real Brand Salt. You can use more or less salt in the recipes depending upon your personal taste.

TIP #1: You can freeze these in ice cube trays and then add to your child's sport bottle before they leave for the field. By the start of the game the ice cubes will have melted and they are left with a cold homemade sports drink.

TIP #2: Freeze the mixture in ice pop molds for a delicious and healthy summer hydration snack for your kids.
