Strength Training in Midlife for Bone Health

BONE HEALTH IN MIDLIFE

If you are a woman over 40, have you thought about your bone health? If not, you need to start thinking about how you are taking care of your bones. Think about these stats:

1. Approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and another 44 million have low bone density, placing them at increased risk. This means that half of all adults age 50 and older are at risk of breaking a bone and should be concerned about bone health. (source: National Osteoporosis Foundation

2. One in two women and up to one in four men will break a bone in their lifetime due to osteoporosis. For women, the incidence is greater than that of heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined. (source: National Osteoporosis Foundation

3. By stressing your bones, strength training can increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. (source: Mayo Clinic)

Ladies, if you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia you must consider a regular strength training program. It is so easy to do and does not require expensive equipment or gym memberships.

Recently inside of my monthly support group, we did a Master Class on the importance of weight training as women in midlife. There are so many incredible benefits to weight training in this phase of life. In the above video you can get a behind-the-scenes look at a portion of this master class that was taught by a Certified Personal Trainer.

In this clip we are talking specifically about the amazing benefits to our bones when we regularly and consistently lift weights.

As always, I hope this information is helpful to you as you travel this journey of health in midlife.
